Today, T-Pain shocked the world (or at least all of us who were in High School when T-Pain and Lil Wayne ran the rap game) when he released “T-Wayne”, the collaborative album between himself and Lil Wayne. On the album, though, is a particular stand out cut, “Breath”. “Breath” is a stand out because it uses the same exact beat as “Did It On Em” by Nicki Minaj.
Now, this version was probably recorded in 2009 and Nicki’s version was released on her album in 2010. The timelines are really close. The thing is, it doesnt sound like a cover at all. It’s a complete song, different hook and everything, just the same beat. Its safe to assume that T-Wayne never purchased the rights to the beat, seeing as the album never seemed to be ready for release. We honestly like Nicki’s version better anyways.
It isn’t exactly unusual for producers to give a beat to multiple artists before somebody finally purchases it. It happened with “Hot N*gga” by Bobby Shmurda, which was originally “Jackpot” by Lloyd Banks, as a more recent example.
We reached out to Bangladesh to see which version was recorded first, if he even knows. We’ll let you know. Listen to both versions below:
